Artists-in-Residence
2017 - 2018
As a “base for reinvigorating the arts” in central Taiwan, the National Taichung Theater (NTT) has been committed to introducing and cultivating outstanding performing arts programs from home and abroad, and presenting diverse creativity in a refreshing theater space, so as to overturn the impression of how the audience appreciate the arts, thereby revitalizing the arts and cultural industries.
To encourage the development of exhibitions, performances and creations, the NTT has launched the Artist-in-Residence Program, which provides resources to champion the artists and serves as a platform for dialogue. This shows the NTT is giving all-round support to the artists from the side of creation to the side of the audience.
From 2017 to 2018, the NTT invited the world-class dancer, Bulareyaung Pagarlava, a.k.a. “happy warrior” of the Paiwan tribe, to be an artist in residence. Meanwhile, by opening this program to the artists in Taichung, the NTT has selected two young artists in their 30s, Daniel Wang and Andy Yen, through open audition, and they joined the league of Artists-in-Residence in March 2017.
When a young venue meets experienced and passionate artists, it is hoped that the NTT will become the confluence for creative energies. Artists can use an alien or local perspective to have exchanges with the cultures and communities of Taichung. Furthermore, by expanding the outreach program to include more people, the NTT is devoted to sharing the resources for aesthetics education, broadening the cultural horizons and reaching out to more people, so as to infuse creative energy into central Taiwan.
