Children see a fantastical adventure, while adults glimpse the journeys of their own lives—
a story about friendship, companionship, and growing together.
A lonely Moon longs for a friend, and sets out on a fantastical journey of friendship and self-discovery.
How The Moon Found His Friends is adapted from the beloved children’s picture book by renowned Thai author and illustrator Preeda Punyachand, a story that has accompanied generations of Thai children and carries deep cultural resonance. The theatrical adaptation is created by Thai puppetry artist Sirikarn Bunjongtad (Jae).
The story begins on a quiet night when all living things are asleep. Feeling alone, the Moon pilots a small spaceship and drifts through the vast night sky in search of a friend. Along the way, the Moon encounters animals on Earth, unintentionally disturbing their peaceful sleep. Angered by the intrusion, the animals damage the spaceship, sending it plunging into the sea. There, the Moon is mistaken for one of the starfish. The starfish gently teach the Moon how to form friendships, becoming companions who eventually journey together back into the cosmos.
In How The Moon Found His Friends, live performers share the stage with tabletop puppets, accompanied by vibrant theatrical light and shadow. Through the flexible and imaginative use of space and materials, the performance shifts effortlessly from outer space to Earth, down into the ocean depths, and back to the stars. The stage opens and transforms like a pop-up book, while the puppeteers’ singing adds playful warmth and sensory richness to the storytelling.
As children follow the Moon on his journey, they learn to understand the meaning of friendship. Even adults can find deep resonance in the tale. In a world shaped by rapid technological change, the performance gently invites parents and children alike to rediscover the simple yet profound bonds that allow us to grow together.
The Puppet & Its Double Theater
Founded in 1999, The Puppet & Its Double Theater is Taiwan’s pioneering contemporary puppetry company and has been recognized for more than a decade as one of the country’s outstanding performing arts groups. Its productions have received multiple nominations for the Taishin Arts Award and have been invited to perform at numerous international arts festivals. Touring across fifteen countries, the company is widely regarded as one of Taiwan’s most distinctive theater brands.
Guided by the creative philosophy that “everything can become a puppet”, the company breathes emotional life into objects and continually expands the possibilities of puppetry in contemporary performance. Known for its refined puppet craftsmanship, its works incorporate a wide range of forms, including glove puppets, string puppets, rod puppets, table-top puppets, and shadow theater. Through its distinctive storytelling approach in which performers and puppets share the stage, together with inventive visual design and poetic stage language, the company explores imaginative transformations beyond the limits of the human body. Since its founding, Puppet & Its Double Theatre has also organized numerous international masterclasses, workshops, and professional training programs for puppetry performers.
In 2013, the company relocated from Taipei to Wujie Township, Yilan County, transforming a disused granary into the Lizé Puppet Art Colony—a creative hub equipped with rehearsal studios, a professional puppet-making workshop, and performance spaces. The colony actively hosts initiatives such as the Artist-in-Residence Program, the Lizé International Puppet Festival, and the International Academy of Puppet Arts, offering a unique platform for experimentation and exchange among puppetry artists from Taiwan and around the world.
