Cendrillon by Jules Massenet
12/14(Thu)19:3012/15(Fri)19:3012/16(Sat)14:3012/17(Sun)14:30
This is not quite the Cinderella story we all know. … Instead, Pelly's production is at its effervescent best in busy scenes such as the ball, where a seemingly never-ending line of hopeful princesses, costumed as if by Galliano reimagining Tenniel in topiary, hope to outcharm Prince Charming – or to scare him into submission. The Guardian ★★★★
Mr. Pelly’s direction allows ample room for the opera’s sentiment and humor to shine through. Much has been made of the contrasting musical styles in “Cendrillon”— tender love music for the main couple, pseudo-Baroque music to suggest an aristocratic ambiance, Mendelsohnian delicacy for the fairy scenes. New York Times
Laurent Pelly’s production struck a delicate balance between the formal and absurd aspects of the opera while at the same time giving ample room for the heady romance. Seen and Heard International
A vibrant and enchanting spectacle, the annual flagship NTT opera production, Cendrillon, is brought to life by a collaboration among the Royal Opera House, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Belgium, Opéra de Lille in France, and Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Spain.
