2023 LAB X The Young Artist's Atelier – Interdisciplinary New Media Program

National Taichung Theater (NTT) is committed to the application of technology to performing arts as well as the exploration and co-creation of interdisciplinary arts.
NTT launched the LAB X Platform in 2020, with the aim to incubate creative talents, the Young Artist's Atelier (referred to as the program) highlights the "research process" of creative ideas and practice and the public presentation of interim results. The fourth edition of the program features creative works of interdisciplinary new media and interdisciplinary motion capture. Structured as a mentorship program, the platform functions as an incubation space for professional training, research, and experiment where young artists aged 30 or younger study under prominent guest artists from home and abroad.
The mentors of the 2023 interdisciplinary new media program are Joris Mathieu, director of Théâtre Nouvelle Génération, Centre dramatique national de Lyon, and Nicolas Boudier, scenographer, device designer, lighting designer and photographer. By experience sharing, guidance every step of the way, practical research methodology and intensive exchange for trend insight, young artists will be able to expand their artistic horizon, thinking and agency.

After getting a Master in Theatre Studies, Joris Mathieu founded the Haut et Court art collective in 1998 with a few fellow actors and technical creators in Lyon. As passionate about literature as about visual arts, Joris Mathieu focuses on adapting novels or short stories, which gives him the opportunity to fully express himself as a stage director and author on stage.

Scenographer, device designer, lighting designer and photographer
He designs shows and scenic devices integrating light, sound, video, innovation, technology and virtual images, digital (augmented reality) or mechanical (optical theater) processes. These scenic proposals lead to immersive experiences allowing another perception of stage and a new relationship with the audience. He develops his work in the field of theater, dance, installation and museography. As a permanent artist at the Théâtre Nouvelle Génération - CDN of Lyon, he collaborates since 1998 with Joris Mathieu in the conception of all the creations of Haut & Court company.

Anne Consciousness
When did the consciousness of humans creating human-like “humanoids” emerge?
The earliest known humanoid — possibly dating back to the Eastern Han Dynasty — was called a ‘Yong’ and was used to be buried with the deceased as a substitute for actors, indulging human desires in the afterlife.
In 1880, an unidentified female corpse was found floating in the Seine River in France. After the body was salvaged, people were shocked because the girl's face and facial features were clearly visible and not swollen or deformed by water. However, no one knew who she was. Later, a pathologist made a mask of her face and created a humanoid figure that evolved into Resusci Anne.
In the future, humans may desire to create humanoids that are even more “humans” as our lovers, family, egos, and beliefs. Anne is such an object to men. Through continuous shaping and modification of the humanoid, it reveals their deepest desires and projects their needs for intimacy. As men desire a more human-like Annie, she becomes one. However, in the process, men become a kind of “object”.
Born in Wulai, Taiwan, HSUEH Tzu-chieh is a theater director and playwright. He is the founder of Juicy Berry Studio, and is passionate about interdisciplinary and cross-cultural collaborations in the arts, as well as committed to integrating multimedia technology aesthetics with theater, using various creative media to find ways to engage in dialogue with diverse communities and groups in the society. His works revolve around inter-ethnic themes, focusing on various contradictions, conflicts, phenomena in contemporary society, and the extraordinary in the ordinary.
2022 The Zone (directed and written) won the Taoyuan Technology Performing Arts Awards and was invited to the Tokyo Festival Asian Performing Arts Camp project.
2020 THE WALL (directed and written) was selected for the 12th Young Stars New Vision.
2018 The solo performance Blue Island 99 (directed and written) was invited to perform in Ireland and Sydney.
Multiplicity
“Presence and absence” has become a contemporary issue that must be explored and contemplated with the rapid development of technology, media, and society. We discuss the state of presence and absence from three perspectives in this piece.
First, in terms of plot and script, the audience experiences various events caused by the presence and absence of family members across different generations through the father's perspective, and through the confession of grandma and grandson, the audience gets to feel their hearts. Second, in terms of performance design, we create a fictional infinite space using digital technology to project the stage and era on all four sides, attempting to explore the presence and absence brought about by new media and technology in live performances. Finally, we design different viewing experiences by placing the audience in different perspectives and interfaces, so that the viewing experience also has a contrast between presence and absence. We want to explore together with the audience via their experience process to find what we recognize as existence and emotion in the contemporary world where technology and interface are integrated.
LEE Ye、CHEN Ta-tsanCHEN Ta-tsan is a lighting designer, cross-domain integration development designer, and engineer. He graduated from the National Taiwan University Department of Drama & Theatre in 2018. His lighting design collaborations include working with Anarchy Dance Theatre, Ultra Combos, LuxuryLogico, Very Theatre, etc. In 2022, he enrolled in the National Tsing Hua University Graduate Institute of Art and Technology and founded Dazai Studio Ltd. in 2023. The Studio has collaborated with Industrial Technology Research Institute, Surprise Lab, and served as the Game Master of Le Bal de Paris de Blanca Li in Taiwan. CHEN hopes to internalize emerging technologies and techniques and apply them to live performances from the perspective of designers and engineers to practice creative thinking and explore the possibility of innovation.
LEE Ye is a freelance theater worker who often collaborates with HaoxHsiaoTroupe and Gather Theatre Group. His directing work Living a Dog's Life was accepted for the 111th Youth Arts Development Grant Program from the Ministry of Culture. LEE's vision is not to limit his creations to a single medium as a platform, with this belief, he has began self-studying game development related knowledge since 2022, and is currently working on adapting his accumulated theater works into games using the Ren’Py engine.
