A dazzling transformation that traverses heaven and earth, rewriting the divine through a myth of ugly beauty.
Are they demons, or are they deities?
Inspired by The Classic of Mountains and Seas, an ancient Chinese mythological text, and the Daoist figure of the Queen Mother of the West, The Legend of Queer and Divine traces a journey of becoming, from the “other” to the divine feminine. Its protagonist, Chaos, is an existence that defies all categories. Tormented by a sense of not belonging and unable to contain the darkness within, Chaos encounters the enlightened Queen Mother of the West, who reveals a different truth: true beauty does not reside in the standards of others, but in allowing one’s singular nature to shine.
At once a newly imagined myth and a reflection of contemporary queer experience, the work invites audiences to reconsider what has long been taken for granted and to recognize the radiance within every soul.
Created by visionary director-playwright Kim CHEN in collaboration with master puppeteer SU Chun-ying, the production brings together some of Taiwan’s leading drag queens, including Yolanda, Rico, and Makeila, who embody a pantheon of demon-deities.
Set within a dazzling Taiwanese-style drag spectacle, the work interweaves glove puppetry narration, lip-sync performance, and Taiwanese pop music. The Legend of Queer and Divine reimagines tradition by bringing this puppetry form into dialogue with queer drag performance.
The result is a mythological cabaret spectacle that transcends time, bold, sensual, and exuberant, celebrating the dazzling transformation of Chaos.
