Moonlit Zen: Chi-long TENG Vocal Recital
09/12(Sat)19:30
Moonlit Zen is a vocal recital filled with graceful beauty and a sense of Zen. The program connects two eras through two songs titled Farewell.
The first Farewell, with lyrics by Master Hong Yi, has remained beloved and widely sung to this day. Another poem by Master Hong Yi, Written on Leaving Jingfeng: Chanting of Chrysanthemums, includes the lines: "I came to plant the seeds; I leave before the flowers bloom. Yet surely their beauty will appear, waiting for those who come after." These words suggest a life devoted to cultivation and sowing seeds, leaving a spiritual legacy for future generations.
Seventy years later, another Farewell was born, echoing the same imagery of ancient roads, long pavilions, and endless green grass beneath the sky. Its composer and lyricist, Zhen Ru, responds to Master Hongyi’s vision in Thinking of You Together: “Who once brought the seeds here? Now the flowers bloom in full color. We are together, and red and purple blossoms spread across the earth.”
Through Chi-Long Teng’s crossover bel canto interpretation, the music takes on an ethereal and timeless quality. The two Farewell songs bridge two eras, carrying a Zen spirit from heart to heart, and portraying a living stream of spiritual inheritance in full bloom.
