NTT Artist in Residence CHUANG Chih-wei In the Progress Space Exploration Project
2020/08/20(Thu)~2020/09/20(Sun)
CHUANG Chih-wei is an artist in residence of NTT in 2019 & 2020. Based on his investigation and experiment during this period, the exhibition presents his reflection on art practice. Through observation and creation with the intervention of technology and human planning, his work enables us to rethink and opens up imagination for space. Meanwhile, he also focuses on the creative process. Starting from himself and the context of artist-in-residence, combined with a platform for crowd engagement, the process shortens the distance between an artist and the public. He attempts to express that his work originates from observation of multiple cross sections of space and time. Among different people and space, these sections continue to clash with each other, hence forming something new.
“Together”, unity, commonality, and congregation. The collectivity and interaction among human beings.
“Strolling” refers to the actual state of work for the artist in residence. By reviewing the venue time and time again and strolling through the space, the artist has continued to explore and observe the National Taichung Theater (NTT), which morphed into the act of collection, thereby reaching out for organic ideas from inorganic space.
CHUANG Chih-wei practices site-specific art. In 2019, his in-residence study started from observation. Impressed by the curved architecture of NTT, which deviates from the norm, he believes the interplay between people and space is becoming more apparent. Together with NTT, he coordinated 5 Space Exploration Workshops open to the general public and young practitioners from the disciplines of architecture, space, art, and design. Through the eyes of the crowd, a multi-faceted exploration became possible. Their observation and imagination were later preserved and recorded in the form of hand-drawing, text, and photography.
In the Progress is CHUANG Chih-wei’s in-residence project in 2020. Inheriting the concept of Group from his previous work, Rainbow in The Darkness. He also places emphasis on the creative process. Starting from himself and the context of artist-in-residence, refining the observation of the workshop participants, and extracting Symbol, Fluidity, Space, and Imagination as the keywords for his work, he designed 4 installations in conjunction with curved wall projections.
During the creation of this work, CHUANG Chih-wei worked alongside with NTT and the participants. In this exhibition, he offers a variety of angles and distances for the audience to view the work. Together, let’s once again explore and observe NTT in full and let our imagination roam freely.
