Between Battlefield and Sanctuary draws upon the ancient myth of Chio-Tian Hsuan-Nu and Chiyou as its narrative foundation, weaving together Leader of the Parade rituals, powerful percussion, and immersive physical theatre into a theatrical journey that traverses the celestial realm, the mortal world, and an apocalyptic landscape. Through four interconnected chapters, the work explores enduring questions of war and order, freedom and faith, divinity and humanity.

Rooted in the rich traditions of Taiwanese folk belief, the production transforms cultural elements—including Guan Jiang Shou, Jia Jiang formations, ceremonial drum ensembles, and ritual movements—into a contemporary theatrical language of characters, imagery, and symbolism. Traditional Taiwanese opera serves as the narrative thread, employing stylized singing, recitation, and movement to bridge ancient mythology with modern audiences. The interplay between classical opera and contemporary theatre offers a renewed artistic interpretation of Taiwan's living folk traditions.

Breaking away from the conventions of the proscenium stage, the performance unfolds within a fully immersive environment. Performers, ceremonial processions, and resonant percussion move throughout the performance space, dissolving the boundary between audience and performers.
