From four images flow a smorgasbord of emotions……In just under an hour and a half Flesh, Belgian theatre company Still Life, communicates tragic truths about the human condition all without uttering a word. BroadwayWorld ★★★★★
Life has moments of sudden twists and turns. Acclaimed at the Avignon Festival in France and the London International Mime Festival in the UK, Flesh by the Belgian company Still Life is a highly praised production consisting of four wordless, darkly comic short-form pieces. In these almost absurd everyday situations that swing between tragedy and comedy, the play explores the presence and absence of the physical body: by the bedside of a critically ill loved one, on the night when bandages are unwrapped after plastic surgery, in a VR adventure aboard the Titanic, and among siblings fiercely dividing their mother's ashes. Through meticulously crafted physical vocabulary, the audience is guided to rediscover life and the human body.
“Death is always present – it reminds us that we are alive,” declares the Belgian company Still Life, whose unceasing exploration of the theme of death has been undisguisedly candid yet intriguing since their inaugural production, Où les hommes mourraient encore. Creators Sophie Linsmaux and Aurelio Mergola, both fervent admirers of hyperrealistic sculptor Ron Mueck, aspire to craft stories on stage where the line between reality and illusion blurs seamlessly, and everyday scenarios take unexpected turns, “we wanted to make people look differently at the world – to create a theatre without words that was meaningful.”
Review from the British weekly newspaper The Stage remarks that “the piece walks an assured line between the absurd, the poignant and the disquieting.”
