Bach's six suites for unaccompanied cello have been the cello's bible for three centuries, and Wispelwey is surely among their finest interpreters today. Over thirty years he has recorded the set three times and performed it over a thousand times, yet still listens with a curious ear. At home in period and modern traditions, he gives every phrase both scholarly grounding and vitality. One cello, unaccompanied— this evening offers not only Bach, but a reading shaped over half a lifetime and deepening still. Hear, and be moved.
