In the harem of the Tang Dynasty, Shuangyue, Guangzhi, and Xiangqi served as handmaidens to Noble Consort Mei. Shuangyue, having spent fifteen years within the palace, knew nothing of worldly love. One day, she chanced upon the emperor by a garden pavilion, her heart stirred with longing. Yet, like falling petals yearning for love while the indifferent brook ripples on, her feelings went unanswered. Disheartened yet unwilling to abandon hope, she seized the chance while sewing winter garments for the border soldiers, hiding her love poem within the fabric.
Guangzhi, having long given up hope of the emperor’s favor, channeled her loneliness and affection into her bond with Shuangyue. Xiangqi, who once shared a fleeting moment of intimacy with the emperor, remained perpetually trapped in the warmth of that night. Ultimately, she fell into the well, yet her spirit lingered, bound by her undying affection.
When Shuangyue’s poem was discovered, the emperor, moved by her profound loneliness, chose not to punish her but to betroth her to the one who had found her verse. Three years later, he granted amnesty to all the palace maids. Guangzhi, feeling adrift in her sudden freedom, was greeted by Shuangyue and her husband. In the end, they brought her home to live together, finding solace and companionship in each other’s presence.
