An honest question for all of us: between freedom and companionship, how much are we willing to give for love?
Widely hailed as a landmark of the modern musical, COMPANY is one of the most groundbreaking works by legendary composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, the celebrated “father of contemporary American musical theater.” Since its premiere in 1970, the production has received 14 Tony Award nominations and won six, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. Over the past half century, it has been revived numerous times on both Broadway and London’s West End, earning countless accolades and securing its place as a must-see classic beloved by theater audiences around the world.
On his 35th birthday, the protagonist Robert finds himself surrounded by friends. The party is lively and filled with laughter, yet beneath the celebration he senses an emptiness that is hard to ignore. From this seemingly ordinary moment of urban life, COMPANY unfolds, inviting audiences into a musical journey that explores intimacy, companionship, and the choices we make about how to live.
As Robert spends time with couples around him, he begins to glimpse the many forms relationships can take. Some partners lean on each other within marriage, while others grow weary through constant compromise. Some settle down out of loneliness, while others keep their distance to avoid commitment. Through conversations, jokes, and occasional conflicts that appear lighthearted on the surface, the musical gradually reveals the emotional truth of modern city life: a longing for connection, yet an equally strong reluctance to be confined.
Robert’s friends constantly probe into his love life, wondering why he has not married and whether he truly enjoys the freedom of being single. With each question, they draw closer to the fears and hopes he has long struggled to articulate. Amid the intertwining stories of these relationships, audiences may find reflections of their own familiar moments and emotional choices.
