The story begins like this...
When the three sisters returned to their old family house in Huwei, Yunlin, after many years, they were startled to find that their uncle, aunt, second great-uncle, and third great-aunt had hardly aged a day, with time slowly passing by this declining place. Initially, the sisters were desperate to seize their right to the ancestral house, but they were inadvertently drawn into the dying patriarch's will - to inherit the mantle of the Song family's Soul-Guiding Singing Array, with a prize of five million dollars. Accepting the challenge, the sisters set out to split the inheritance, starting from scratch and committing to learn the art of leading the funeral procession.
As they searched through the small town, they unexpectedly stirred up memories of their long-lost father — a gambler and Taoist priest — and their estranged mother — a professional mourner — reigniting the distant familial bonds in their hearts. The eldest sister, Guo Zhen, emerging from a dissolute life, not only had to confront her incredibly unconfident chubby younger sister, Guo Mei, and her drag queen younger brother, Guo Hao (also known as Angela), but also her own complicated love life. However, Guo Zhen's greatest challenge was witnessing her mother, Meiling's spirit soar away, separated by life and death. Forced to mature and become independent at an early age, Guo Zhen couldn't help but ask the heavens: why did her life seem to be filled with nothing but bad luck in this heartless world?
In the end, the three sisters danced with their youth, dancing away the many regrets in their lives, rising above the ups and downs that fate had thrown their way, as well as the absent parents.
Directed by the acclaimed director TSENG Hui-cheng, with music composed by the emerging composer Robert KANG, and scripted by the Golden Bell Awards-winning playwright ZHAN Jie, Don’t Cry, Dancing Girls the Musical is a love letter to this land and all the people who live upon it.
