2025 NTT Arts NOVA Bulareyaung Dance Company tiaen tiamen Episode 2
03/28(Fri)19:3003/29(Sat)14:3003/30(Sun)14:30
In 2023, Bulareyaung Dance Company presented the first episode of the “tiaen tiamen trilogy,” pulima (meaning 'those skilled with their hands' in Pinayuanan), showcasing the fearless energy and creativity of young dancers. In 2024, the second episode, puqulu (meaning 'the wise mind' in Pinayuanan), delves into wisdom and life’s connections, as choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava guides the audience through a journey of growth. Paiwan artists ABAO blends elements of the old tune and the new music, while Image painting reretan pavavaljung uses color-fields images on his visual design to symbolize relational connections. The dancers push themselves to interpret the relationship between self and society through movement, expressing personal growth—not only centered on themselves in youth, but gradually embracing an evolving awareness, empathy, and unique perspectives on others and the environment as they mature.
Choreographer / Bulareyaung Pagarlava
A Paiwan choreographer born in Taitung’s Jialan Village, Bulareyaung decided at the age of 12 to pursue a career as a dancer. After graduating from the School of Dance at Taipei National University of the Arts, he joined Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, touring internationally. In 1998, he received a fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council to study in New York, and has since been invited to choreograph and perform with numerous dance companies in Taiwan and abroad, including the Martha Graham Dance Company in the U.S., Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, and Cloud Gate 2. His works have been praised for their “intense emotional appeal, refreshing and distinct style.”
In 2015, Bulareyaung returned to his roots and founded the Bulareyaung Dance Company in Taitung, aiming to plant the seeds of dance along Taiwan’s eastern coast and connect with his dancers to share their creations with the world. From 2017 to 2018, he served as the inaugural Artist-in-Residence at the National Taichung Theater. In 2022, he was laurelled with the 22nd National Award for Arts.
Music Director / ABAO (aljenljeng tjaluvie)
A Paiwan musician and multiple Golden Melody Awards winner, ABAO released her second native-language album, Kinakaian – Mother Tongue, in 2019. Blending electronic music with native languages from various Taiwanese tribes, the album received critical acclaim and earned eight nominations at the 31st Golden Melody Awards. In recent years, ABAO has focused on interdisciplinary collaborations, integrating Indigenous culture with different performing arts to foster a broader understanding of the current state of Indigenous culture. In 2021, she produced N1: Nanguaq No.1, a compilation that amplifies the voices of a new generation of Indigenous artists, offering a diverse cultural through collaboration.
Image Painting / reretan pavavaljung
An artist from the Paiwan tribe, primarily works with oil painting, graphic design, digital painting, and murals. Drawing inspiration from experiences that bridge life in both tribal and urban settings, his work offers a unique perspective that records or satirizes contemporary issues, reflecting the journey of Indigenous people as they seek a place in the world. His art has received widespread acclaim. In 2016, he was invited to a residency at the indigenous Riddu Riđđu Festival in Norway. In 2020, he designed the poster for Yo-Yo Ma: The Bach Project and also created the cover art for musician ABAO’s albums Vavayan and Kinakaian.
Bulareyaung Dance Company
Founded in 2015 by Taiwanese Indigenous choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava in Taitung, the Bulareyaung Dance Company brings together young dancers who immerse themselves in the natural landscapes, singing by the shore, laboring in the mountains, and engaging in extensive field research. Through these experiences, they continuously unearth and reconnect with their traditional heritage and culture, developing a unique vocabulary of body movements. Since its founding, the company has presented works such as La Song, Qaciliay, Colors, Stay That Way, Luna, #Yes or No, Not Afraid of the Sun and Rain, Rustling, Whirring, and tiaen tiamen Episode 1. In 2018, they received the 16th Taishin Arts Award for Performing Arts for Stay That Way, and the following year, they won the Grand Prize for Luna. They are the first team in Taiwan to receive consecutive awards.
