New Perceptions, New Worlds Kimball Gallagher 2024 Taiwan Recitals
10/13(Sun)15:00
This recital features works of composers inspired by encounters with musical traditions other than their own. Debussy's Estampes was inspired by pentatonic gamelan music from Indonesia, Arabic melodies from Spain while Peruvian-American composer Hwaen Chu'qi takes inspiration from the West African Kora. Gallagher's Preludes, each one dedicated to notable people he met in his travels around the world, were inspired by Ravel’s Prelude on the name of Haydn. George Bizet's set of Children Games inspired both Gallagher and Ming Hsiu Yen to create their own Children's Games. Chopin's Sonata marries Italian bel-canto, the feverish tarantella dance with inspiration from the reflective and tranquil nocturnes of Irish composer, John Fied. Each piece aims to open a window onto new sensations and new worlds.
