Introduction

A modern retake of Boccaccio's Decameron, The Prawning Decameron is set against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic under which no country is spared in the disaster. Under the threat of the pandemic, a group of people spend ten days in a prawning restaurant complex in the suburbs of Chiayi, exchanging tales of truth and lie. The production is the first collaboration between Our Theatre and puppetry master YEUNG Fai and also features a star cast of Taiwanese glove puppetry to jointly explore the changes brought forth by the pandemic of the century to the world. The story reflects the absurdity of humanity in the pandemic when the isolation lifts all social constraints.

Artistic and Creative Team

Producer & Director / WANG Jhao-cian

WANG Jhao-cian is a Taiwan-based theatre director and cultural practitioner, and the Founder and Artistic Director of Our Theatre, a long-term cultural laboratory founded in 2003 in Chiayi.
His work focuses on developing theatre as an operating method — a way to organize people, time, space, and attention — rather than producing isolated performances.Across theatre-making, local curation, and education,he is concerned with how cultural practices are sustained over time and how action becomes possible within specific social and spatial conditions.
Working closely with local contexts, Wang’s practice extends beyond the stage into cities, schools, and civic spaces. He develops long-term, site-responsive cultural systems that emphasize continuity, repetition, and participation, treating culture not as output, but as an ongoing practice.
His work consistently rejects fast replication and spectacle-driven logic, insisting instead on methods that can endure time, friction, and failure.

Director & Leading Performer / YEUNG Fai

YEUNG Fai was born in Zhangzhou, Fujian, China in 1964 into a family of famous glove puppeteers. Since the late 1980s, he started his career of performing and traveling with puppets around the world. He has moved to France since 2001. Besides performance, YEUNG also teaches traditional puppetry. He is the instructor of puppetry at l'École Nationale Supérieure des Arts de la Marionnette in Charleville-Mézières, France. He has been invited to give master classes in Germany, Spain, Russia, Italy, Poland, Brazil, Israel, and Australia.

Our Theatre

Our Theatre is a cultural organization founded in 2003 in Chiayi, Taiwan. Operating as a cultural hub for experimentation and long-term practice, Our Theatre uses theatre as a method to engage with local narratives, social questions, and cultural transformation. Rather than centering solely on individual productions, Our Theatre develops ongoing cultural practices that emphasize continuity and sustainability. Its methods extend across performance, festivals, education, and related cultural initiatives, translating place-based traditions and lived experience into contemporary artistic forms, with an emphasis on cultural sustainability.
