When a VJ meets a masterful composer! For the general public, lasers evoke a sense of cutting-edge technology and a cold, futuristic aesthetic. However, for new media artist Aka CHANG, even the most complex and dazzling visuals originate from a single light source. Laser, with its intensity and decisiveness, embodies simplicity and directness, having the ability to both dissect space and immerse individuals in the structures formed by light.
December Nite creates a three-dimensional audio-visual structure where space, sound, and people are interconnected. Within the structure, the composite mapping of various light-emitting media such as laser light and projectors engages in a dialogue with the geometric installations. The sound composition by HAN Cheng-yeh, pouring emotions through string instruments and piano, intertwines with light and shadow to narrate poetic and prose-like passages. The five segments in the performance are independent yet interconnected, pulling each other along.
The song December Night by the singer-songwriter Ze' HWANG uses guitar and vocal to depict the warmth of receiving a smile from a beloved person on a winter night. Drawing inspiration from this, December Nite is named, echoing the temporal sense of its predecessor, June Orbs, and exploring poetic imagination within the geometric variations of light and shadow. Through the soundscape created with a minimalistic and subtractive approach, the work aims to engage the emotional perception of audiences, leading them to take on a unique resonant journey within the gentle interweaving of audio and visuals.
