We are Ghosts

We are Ghosts is part of the Rewriting Classics Project of 4 Chairs Theatre, the purpose of which is to ‘rethink’ classic plays from the Taiwanese perspective. This is an adaptation of Ghosts by 19th century Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. As a commentary on morality, its subject matter included religion, venereal disease, incest and euthanasia, which created strong controversy at that time.

Playwright CHIEN Li-ying looked at these issues from the cultural viewpoint of filial piety. In ethnic Chinese families, “eating” and “sex” are a major activity and a major taboo, respectively. Chien explores the role of mothers and family tragedies passed on for generations, as well as social values in the most abnormal family relationships within the Chinese ethical tradition, revealing “ghosts” that forever linger.

4 CHAIRS THEATRE
4 Chairs Theatre was officially founded in 2007 by a group of young theatre artists. By extracting energy from their visions for this new era and personal life experiences, 4 Chairs Theatre aims to create performances that are not restricted by style, topics, venue or site, but to honestly experiment with the idea of ‘theatre/troupe’ and explore the coherence of its form and content. '4 Chairs' represents not only the original four core artists, but also the 'chairs' in the theater, arousing audience members' awareness of the life they are living in modern society.
