Ola Maciejewska
DANCE CONCERT

DANCE CONCERT
Dance Concert alludes to the history between dance and music. It also triggers collective memories associated with the music scene, such as famous composers, melancholic rock stars, virtuoso musicians, orchestra conductors, and pogo dances, etc. In Great Britain, a dance concert is a stage performance of traditional dance. But, this is not the case here. In Dance Concert, dancers control the music.
In the 1960s, Concerts of Dance by Judson Dance Theatre sustained the legacy of Bauhaus and Black Mountain College. Decades later, it is not the objective to stage the same methodologies (improvisation, chance operation), but rather to insist on the experimental nature of dance, and its constant dialogue with music.
The main reference, however, is Léon Theremin's terpsitone, named after the Greek muse Terpsichore. This was one of the first electronic music instruments to be controlled by the dancing body.
