2024 LAB X The Young Artist's Atelier – Augmented Reality

Learning x Practice x Professional Communication
National Taichung Theater (NTT) is committed to the application of technology to performing arts as well as the exploration and co-creation of interdisciplinary arts.
NTT launched the LAB X Platform in 2020, with the aim to incubate creative talents, the Young Artist’s Atelier (referred to as the program) highlights the "research process" of creative ideas and practice and the public presentation of interim results. The fifth edition of the program features creative works of Body Sensing and Augmented Reality (AR). Structured as a mentorship program, the platform functions as an incubation space for professional training, research, and experiment where young artists aged 30 or younger study under prominent guest artists from home and abroad.
The mentors of the 2024 Augmented Reality program are Joris Mathieu, director of Théâtre Nouvelle Génération, Centre dramatique national de Lyon, and Nicolas Boudier, scenographer, device designer, lighting designer and photographer. By experience sharing, guidance every step of the way, practical research methodology and intensive exchange for trend insight, young artists will be able to expand their artistic horizon, thinking and agency.

Cleo
This project explores the integration of Augmented Reality (AR) into the realm of performing arts. It attempts to break the boundaries between the theater stage and the audience, immersing viewers in the narrative through the blending of the virtual and the real. By blending the virtual and the real on stage, it aims to create new narratives through the application of new media in theater. Cleo is inspired from the classic film Cléo de 5 à 7 by French New Wave director Agnès Varda, focusing on women's self-dialogue and growth during intimate moments. The work continues the character of Cléo from the film, exploring the gender-specific challenges faced by the modern Cleo and portraying the inner conflict and contradictions between Cleo's female image and her true self through AR dance compositions in the head-mounted display that intertwine with the live dancer's choreography.
The work explores different viewing methods, allowing the audience to become part of the overall theatrical experience as they peer into the protagonist's inner world.

He Is Elsewhere
This work is inspired by the cyclical nature of encounters and farewells, familiarity and estrangement, and intimacy and unfamiliarity in life. The protagonist repeatedly wanders between such crossroads and decides to break free from this cycle to pursue an ideal life. Through the performative form of Extended Reality (XR) theater, the creators aim to use this script as a metaphorical reflection on the medium itself, integrating the creators' distilled personal experiences. While implementing XR technology, the creators strive to maintain a theatrical perspective in their thinking and creation, enabling new technology to generate novel experiences within the theatrical realm.

Currently studying in the Department of Ethnology at National Chengchi University, HUNG is pursuing a double major in Digital Content and a minor in Philosophy as well.
