NYO Jazz—comprising outstanding young American jazz musicians ages 16–19 from across the US—showcases the legacy and bright future of American jazz. In 2019, the acclaimed ensemble returns for its second year following an inaugural season of extraordinary music-making and a successful debut tour to Europe, during which the musicians played to sold-out houses and received standing ovations and rave reviews.
Chosen through a comprehensive and highly selective audition process, these remarkable musicians first come together each summer to engage in a rigorous two-week training residency in New York with world-class jazz masters. Following its residency, NYO Jazz performs at New York City’s Carnegie Hall with a celebrated guest artist before embarking on a tour to some of the world’s great music capitals.
The musicians serve as dynamic music ambassadors as they share this uniquely American musical genre with people around the globe. As part of their travel schedule, NYO Jazz musicians also have opportunities to meet and collaborate with young local musicians and experience the richness of different cultures and music.
NYO Jazz’s diverse repertoire ranges from big band standards to Carnegie Hall–commissioned works for the ensemble, as well as other contemporary pieces exploring jazz’s influence on hip-hop, R&B, and pop music. The first Carnegie Hall–commissioned work for NYO Jazz—Run With Jones—was written by Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellow Miguel Zenón and performed on the ensemble’s inaugural tour in 2018. For NYO Jazz’s 2019 concerts, Carnegie Hall has commissioned Ayn Inserto, who has been hailed as one of the most distinctive large-ensemble composers of her generation. The program will also include a new work by Jihye Lee, plus new arrangements by Igmar Thomas and Wycliffe Gordon, as well as classic pieces by Dizzy Gillespie, Don Ellis, Thad Jones, and Mary Lou Williams.
Launched in the summer of 2018, the first-ever NYO Jazz performed with bandleader/trumpeter Sean Jones—one of the field’s outstanding performer-composer-educators—joined by special guest artist Dianne Reeves. After its Carnegie Hall debut, the ensemble embarked on its first international tour, performing at some of Europe’s most prestigious concert halls and music festivals in London, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, and Berlin.
