1857年，華格納擱置了手邊構思創作長達十年的《尼貝龍指環》系列樂劇，全心全意專注在另一 部驚世作品《崔斯坦與伊索德》的創作上。作為華格納創作生涯最精煉的作品，《崔斯坦與伊索德》無論在音樂或劇本上皆具備了19世紀浪漫主義的所有要件─唯愛、唯美以及自我意識的覺醒。 崔斯坦與伊索德的愛，凡人看似無法承受，但藏諸於戲劇意涵中的哲學思考卻足以讓人琢磨再三，其音樂與劇情的詩意展現更具有強烈的感官誘惑。歌劇史上鮮少找得到任何一部能與之相比擬的作品，而該劇對後世藝術家的影響更是巨大而深遠。

In 1857, Wagner took a break from his epic masterpiece - “Der Ring des Nibelungen”, a project he had been working on for a decade - to focus on another grand composition: “Tristan und Isolde”.

The most refined work by Wagner, “Tristan und Isolde” encompasses all elements of 19th century Romanticism: pure love, beauty and the awakening of self-consciousness within its music and story.

While the passionate love between Tristan and Isolde would be rather extreme in real life, its philosophical meanings are worthy of contemplation, and the poetic presentation of music and drama in this theatrical piece display such a strong sensual seduction it is difficult to find another piece that can compare with it. This is a masterpiece so great, it affected future generations of artists and continues to be relevant to this day.

For the opening concert of the 2016/17 season, NTSO and Wen-Pin Chien will enthrall audiences with a passionate presentation of “Tristan und Isolde”. Come experience the irresistible yet fatal lure of love.
