National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra Wind Ensemble

National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra Wind Ensemble (NTSOWE) was established in Taipei in June in 1993. The original intention of the ensemble is to attract outstanding music players, gathering the fervor and wisdom of their experiences, and to popularize wind music to the nation.

This new ensemble set a fine model of wind music performing art on a fine orchestration and popularized music education with National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra to bring culture of equitable prosperity in order to elevate the musicality of our nation. Many international renowned maestros have been invited to instruct NTSOWE and to perform with this new team since the establishment. Those U.S. maestros include Kenneth Radnofsky -- the famous saxophonist (in October of 1993), Fredrick Fennell -- the dean of wind music conductors (in June of 1994 and in May of 1999), Stephen G. Peterson -- the wind music conductor at Northwestern University (in February of 1995 and in March of 1998); Rodney Winther -- the wind music conductor at University of Cincinnati (in December of 1997 and in December of 1998) and Craig Kirchhoff -- the wind music professor at Minnesota State University (in November of 1999 and in November of 2000).

NTSOWE has also worked with internal musicians such as Pro. Yeh Shu-han – the virtuoso trumpetist and the conductor, Ho Yu-biao – the wind music conductor and Tuan Fu-hsuan -- the virtuoso tubist. Moreover, NTSOWE has made five recordings from the highlights of the past concerts including “Maestro Fennell and National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra Wind Ensemble”, “Wizard of OZ”, “Floating Wind Music”, “Extreme Trip” and “Wind Music Cheering the Morale of Armies”. Therefore, philharmonic can have more opportunities to appreciate wind music and institutes can promote wind music for education by those CDs.

Inviting by the Representative’s Office in South Africa and overseas Chinese in 1999, NTSOWE held concerts at Basteur Theater, University of Cape Town on July 14 and at State Theater in Pretoria, the capital, on July 16. Local and foreign guests praised the concerts highly that made a successful contribution to the exchange between R.O.C. and South Africa with delicate wind music.

After the efforts and the trials by years, the NTSOWE has accomplished its goal of promoting wind music in northern Taiwan. Both the number of the performers and the appreciators is increasing obviously and noticeable. Considering the potential for developing and promoting wind music in central and southern Taiwan, NTSOWE moved back to the practice location in Wufeng headquarter in 2004, and integrated famous wind music musicians in central Taiwan as well. We aim to bring wind music performances to a new era by diversifying resources, enriching new knowledge of wind music as well as information to share with our nation and pass it on.
