畢業於東吳大學音樂戲演奏組主修小號，師事聶中興、溫哥華歌劇院管弦樂團首席小號Tom Shrothouse以及茱莉亞音樂學院小號教授Robert Nagel。爾後隨台北青年管樂團指揮侯宇彪教授學習管樂指揮，並取得東吳大學音樂研究所碩士學位，主修管弦樂指揮，師事張己任教授，被譽為國內最傑出活躍的指揮之一。
Chang Yung-Yu graduated from Soochow University, Department of Music, and was tutored by Nie Zhong-Xin, Tom Shorthouse and Robert Nagel. Later, he studied wind ensemble conducting under Hou Yu-Biao, who is the chief conductor of Taipei Symphony Band.
