李亞朵夫與俄國五人團交好，深獲穆索斯基器重。儘管才華洋溢，他對譜作大編制的樂曲缺乏興趣，傳世都是小品，八首俄羅斯民歌顯示其駕馭管絃樂法的優越技巧及創意。崇拜貝多芬的布拉姆斯遵循前者的風格譜寫他唯一的小提琴協奏曲，甚至同採D 大調，並有冗長的第一樂章。當時馮畢羅、維尼奧夫斯基與薩拉沙特等都給予負評，首演則毀譽參半。不過此曲通過時間的考驗，已成為小提琴家的試金石。樂曲氣勢宏偉，又洋溢高貴的氣息。譽滿全歐的俄羅斯芭蕾舞團經理狄亞基列夫，原請李亞朵夫為舞劇《火鳥》譜曲，因後者遲遲不交稿，無奈求助於尚無國際聲譽的斯特拉溫斯基，沒想到這位無名小子一鳴驚人，以強烈、充滿驅動力的節奏，大膽突兀的和聲、不規則的音程變化、瑰麗燦爛的音色及清晰的旋律線，宣告一個新時代的到來。

Russian conductor Vassily Sinaisky leads in the NSO in a mostly Russian program that opens with a little-known work by a little-known conductor and ends with one of music history’s best-known composers in what is probably his best-known work. Anatoly Liadov’s most memorable quality was his penchant for laziness and procrastination. He composed little, so if he turns up seldom on symphony programs, well, that’s his own fault! Sinaisky conducts orchestral settings of eight folk tunes that show his inherent understanding of the idiom as well as his skillful and economical orchestration. Stravinsky, on the other hand, has gone down as the composer of the twentieth century. Placing Liadov and Stravinsky’s Firebird ballet score on the same program is entirely fitting, as Liadov was asked to provide the Firebird music before Stravinsky was, but he declined. The Firebird made Stravinsky famous overnight – so famous that he eventually became known as “Mr. Firebird”! In between the Russians we hear Taiwanese violinist and this season’s artist-in residence with the NSO, Paul Huang, in the Brahms concerto, widely regarded as one of the two greatest ever written for the instrument (Beethoven’s is the other).
