Arase Parelé
Performer
Arase’s father is from the Kucapungane community in Wutai, Pingtung, while his mother comes from the Teldrɨka community in Maolin, Kaohsiung. Although both are Rukai communities, their languages and cultural temperaments differ considerably. Growing up between the two gave Arase what he describes as an almost “United Nations” childhood, sharpening his sensitivity to the nuances of different cultures.
Arase pursued performing arts at university and went on to appear in musicals and singing competitions, as well as performing as a resident singer. In recent years, he co-founded Nanguaq, an Indigenous music and cultural label, with ABAO. The experience opened up a new chapter in his creative journey, inspiring him to write extensively in his mother tongue and build a body of songs rooted in his own stories.
