WU Yu-hsien

Dancer

WU Yu-hsien is a multifaceted choreographer and performer whose movement background includes Street Dance (Hip Hop, Locking, Popping, Krump), Flamenco, Butoh and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Also, she has been doing cultural and historical research on Black-American for her artistic works and teaching over the past decade. She uses choreography as a tool to investigate and understand the cultural, social and political context she lives and works in, and she’s very curious about the world view that presented by dance. Her works draw extensively inspiration from her own life experiences, such as social barrier, language hegemony, gender issues, and the philosophy of death. She has been trying to combine, reconstruct and deconstruct different elements such as Street dance, Butoh, and Flamenco to make the dance language, knowledge and aesthetics from different cultures communicate with each other as well. She's currently working on voicing and presenting the experience of Asian and Women through her works.
